I can hear her distinctive voice and her laugh, and just cannot believe that she is gone. I can hear her saying something self-deprecating like "well, I don't know much about this but..." and then asking a question that got right to the heart of whatever obscure scientific topic we were discussing. Then she'd follow up with another, so you knew she was really interested and right there with you. And then she'd get a gleam in her eye and ask a zinger, accompanied by a big smile. Her curiosity and engagement with the world seemed to know no bounds. She has been an important role model for me, as well as a friend, and I am heartbroken to lose her. My heart goes out to Bud and all who knew and loved Betsy.
